Internet Sleuths Noticed Mark Zuckerberg Uses A Beloved Condiment For A Bookend

Sure, there were a couple chaotic things on my 2021 bingo card. After the year 2020, how could there not be? But I'll be real with you: Facebook changing its name to "Meta" and Mark Zuckerberg using a bottle of barbecue sauce as a bookend were not on my agenda. Alas, so goes the internet and the never-ending cycle of meme-worthy news in tech.

In a streaming event today, Mark announced the name change of Meta, saying the new branding speaks to his long-term goals. "Over time, I hope we are seen as a meta-verse company," he said during the announcement.

Throughout the stream, Mark was standing in front of various homey backgrounds. At one point, he paused in front of a set of bookshelves and some internet sleuths spotted a bottle of barbecue sauce on his shelf holding up one end of a stack of books—specifically, cult-favorite barbecue sauce Sweet Baby Ray's. I'd consider this choice pretty innovative, even for the guy that invented one of the most globe-changing platforms of the past century.

Apparently Mark's love for Sweet Baby Ray's is not news to some people of the internet; a Facebook Live event from 2016 showed him smoking meats on his grill with a monstrous bottle of (you guessed it) Sweet Baby Ray's standing at attention. He even said on Clubhouse earlier this year that the "smoking meats" meme is his favorite internet joke he's seen about himself.

We can't confirm exactly why today was the day Facebook got a new name. But what we can confirm is Mark Zuckerberg loves a thick and tangy barbecue sauce. Billionaires, they're just like...us?
