Institutional investors in Zscaler, Inc. (NASDAQ:ZS) lost 15% last week but have reaped the benefits of longer-term growth

Key Insights

  • Significantly high institutional ownership implies Zscaler's stock price is sensitive to their trading actions

  • 51% of the business is held by the top 6 shareholders

  • Recent sales by insiders

To get a sense of who is truly in control of Zscaler, Inc. (NASDAQ:ZS), it is important to understand the ownership structure of the business. The group holding the most number of shares in the company, around 49% to be precise, is institutions. In other words, the group stands to gain the most (or lose the most) from their investment into the company.

No shareholder likes losing money on their investments, especially institutional investors who saw their holdings drop 15% in value last week. However, the 75% one-year return to shareholders might have softened the blow. But they would probably be wary of future losses.

What Does The Institutional Ownership Tell Us About Zscaler?

Many institutions measure their performance against an index that approximates the local market. So they usually pay more attention to companies that are included in major indices.

As you can see, institutional investors have a fair amount of stake in Zscaler. This implies the analysts working for those institutions have looked at the stock and they like it. But just like anyone else, they could be wrong. If multiple institutions change their view on a stock at the same time, you could see the share price drop fast. It's therefore worth looking at Zscaler's earnings history below. Of course, the future is what really matters.

We note that hedge funds don't have a meaningful investment in Zscaler. Ajay Mangal is currently the company's largest shareholder with 20% of shares outstanding. In comparison, the second and third largest shareholders hold about 18% and 6.0% of the stock. Jagtar Chaudhry, who is the second-largest shareholder, also happens to hold the title of Chief Executive Officer.

On further inspection, we found that more than half the company's shares are owned by the top 6 shareholders, suggesting that the interests of the larger shareholders are balanced out to an extent by the smaller ones.

While it makes sense to study institutional ownership data for a company, it also makes sense to study analyst sentiments to know which way the wind is blowing. Quite a few analysts cover the stock, so you could look into forecast growth quite easily.

Insider Ownership Of Zscaler

The definition of an insider can differ slightly between different countries, but members of the board of directors always count. The company management answer to the board and the latter should represent the interests of shareholders. Notably, sometimes top-level managers are on the board themselves.

I generally consider insider ownership to be a good thing. However, on some occasions it makes it more difficult for other shareholders to hold the board accountable for decisions.

Our information suggests that insiders maintain a significant holding in Zscaler, Inc.. It is very interesting to see that insiders have a meaningful US$12b stake in this US$32b business.
