Insider Stock Buying Reaches AU$55.7m On Star Entertainment Group

Over the last year, a good number of insiders have significantly increased their holdings in The Star Entertainment Group Limited (ASX:SGR). This is encouraging because it indicates that insiders are more optimistic about the company's prospects.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Star Entertainment Group

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when insider Bruce Mathieson bought AU$31m worth of shares at a price of AU$0.54 per share. That means that even when the share price was higher than AU$0.51 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Star Entertainment Group insiders own about AU$166m worth of shares (which is 11% of the company). I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchase. And an analysis of the transactions over the last year also gives us confidence.
