Ibsens Hotel

Location

8/100

On Nansensgade, a boho street that’s home to small cafés and specialist shops. The excellent Torvehallerne food hall is two blocks away, and sights within a 15-minute walk include the Botanic Gardens and National Gallery, as well as the lower reaches of trendy-edgy Nørrebro. Nørreport station (a five-minute walk) has train, metro and bus connections, including a direct link to the airport.

Style & character

7/100

Despite having 118 rooms, the hotel retains a boutique feel, with an arty, funky, slightly retro vibe that’s perfectly in keeping with the individual nature of the neighbourhood. Artisans from the boutiques and workshops along Nansensgade were invited to contribute to the décor – you’ll find cushions from one local designer, leather key fobs from another; books from the antiquarian bookshop and a vintage turntable from the corner radio shop.

Reception staff are friendly and helpful. There’s a buzzy lounge/bar area, with a daily Cosy Hour (5-6pm) when guests can pop in for a beer or wine on the house, and outside seating in the courtyard. On-site parking costs 225 Danish Kroner (£27) for 24 hours, and bike-hire is 150 Danish Kroner (£18) per day. Next-door sister hotel Kong Arthur has a spa and fitness room, both open to Ibsens guests; 50 Danish Kroner (£6) buys you access to the latter throughout your stay; the spa is free if you book a treatment or 175 Danish Kroner (£21) for a day pass. Several Nansensgade shops offer 10 per cent discounts to Ibsens guests.

Rooms

6/100

With admirable clarity, rooms are classified simply by size, from Tiny, via Small, Medium, Large and X-Large, up to Junior Suites. At the top end you get plenty of space but Tiny rooms live up to their billing, so trade up if you don’t want to be banging into the furniture every time you move. That said, all rooms get the same super-comfy beds, with smart linens on top and plenty of room underneath for stowing cases. Scandi simplicity rules on the style front; expect clean lines and no clutter, with modular shelves and wall rails for clothes, and functional, white-tiled bathrooms.

Food & drink

7/100

There are two in-house restaurants – casual Pintxos, serving up good tapas, and the more upmarket La Rocca, with a menu of pizzas, pasta and other Italian classics. In the morning, the bar/lounge area becomes the breakfast room, with an attractive and mostly organic buffet spread that follows New Nordic principles, concentrating on seasonal, sustainable, local produce. Freshly-made bread comes from a nearby bakery; jams are homemade; meats and cheeses are supplied by a family-run organic farm; and even the juices change with the seasons.

Value for money

7/100

Double rooms from 600 Danish Kroner (£72) in low season; and from 1,200 Danish Kroner (£144) in high. Breakfast is excluded and costs 155 Danish Kroner (£18.70) per adult. Free Wi-Fi. Registered artmoney artists can use the alternative currency to pay for up to half their room charge.
