How IBM’s Watson Is Expanding Its Horizons

How IBM's 2015 Acquisitions Advanced Its Strategic Imperatives

(Continued from Prior Part)

Various Watson partnerships announced at CES 2016

At the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2016, IBM’s (IBM) CEO, Ginni Rometty, stated that Medtronic (MDT), Under Armour (UA), and SoftBank Robotics are using Watson in varied ways. While Medtronic is using Watson for diabetes management, Under Armour is using it to provide data-backed health and fitness insight.

SoftBank Robotics robot, Pepper, employs Watson’s artificial intelligence. Pepper is employed at Mizuho Financial Group’s (MFG) selective bank branches and Nestle’s coffee shops in Japan (FXY). IBM also chose CES as a platform to announce Watson’s new ventures. IBM announced a partnership with Pathway Genomics, a medical diagnostic firm, and Whirlpool (WHR), a home appliance manufacturer, at CES 2016.

Pathway Genomics revealed Pathway Genomics OME app’s test version, which is powered by Watson technology. The app brings together cognitive computing and deep learning with precision medicine and genetics to enable the company to provide consumers with customized wellness information. Whirlpool appliances will use Watson technology like AI (artificial intelligence) and cognitive analytics to provide more tailored services to consumers.

IBM’s strategy for Watson

IBM is of the opinion that currently there are more than 9 billion connected devices operating that together generate approximately 2.5 quintillion bytes of new data every day. Also, currently, 90% of the data in the world has been created in only the last two years. Thus, this data presents an excellent opportunity for IBM. IBM’s Watson through its deep learning, artificial intelligence, and cognitive computing skills can break down and analyze the data to provide new insights. Cisco (CSCO) and Frost & Sullivan believe that approximately 50 billion devices will be connected by 2020.
