How a 'Nasty Gal' went from petty theft to $100 million

Hitchhiker, shoplifter, entrepreneur, author, girl-boss – Sophia Amoruso could be called a lot of things, but you probably know her best as “Nasty Gal.” She started out selling vintage clothing in an eBay (EBAY) store named Nasty Gal Fashions, inspired by the funk hit of the same name by Betty Davis.

Amoruso turned the store into a $100 million plus business and one of the fastest growing retailers in the country. That rapid rise to fame has turned Amoruso into an inspiration herself, with Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway shadowing her for her current role as a female executive in Nancy Meyers’ “The Intern.”

Amoruso tells her story in her New York Times bestseller titled, "#GirlBoss," now out in paperback.

She sat down with Yahoo Finance to talk about why she decided to step down as CEO of Nasty Gal, and to offer some advice for young entrepreneurs just starting out in the business world.

Tip #1: "Resilience and persistence are really important," according to Amoruso. "A little bit of humility... knowing yourself... the things that you're good at and the things you could be better at" is also really important, says #GirlBoss. "Playing to your strengths, I think, is incredibly important and that's part of why I'm not the CEO anymore."
