Here's Why We're Not Too Worried About Evolv Technologies Holdings' (NASDAQ:EVLV) Cash Burn Situation

There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.

Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether Evolv Technologies Holdings (NASDAQ:EVLV) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. In this report, we will consider the company's annual negative free cash flow, henceforth referring to it as the 'cash burn'. We'll start by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves in order to calculate its cash runway.

Does Evolv Technologies Holdings Have A Long Cash Runway?

A company's cash runway is the amount of time it would take to burn through its cash reserves at its current cash burn rate. As at March 2023, Evolv Technologies Holdings had cash of US$181m and no debt. In the last year, its cash burn was US$80m. That means it had a cash runway of about 2.3 years as of March 2023. Arguably, that's a prudent and sensible length of runway to have. We should note, however, that if we extrapolate recent trends in its cash burn, then its cash runway would get a lot longer. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.

How Well Is Evolv Technologies Holdings Growing?

Evolv Technologies Holdings reduced its cash burn by 18% during the last year, which points to some degree of discipline. But it was the operating revenue growth of 132% that really shone. We think it is growing rather well, upon reflection. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.

Can Evolv Technologies Holdings Raise More Cash Easily?

We are certainly impressed with the progress Evolv Technologies Holdings has made over the last year, but it is also worth considering how costly it would be if it wanted to raise more cash to fund faster growth. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.

Evolv Technologies Holdings has a market capitalisation of US$901m and burnt through US$80m last year, which is 8.8% of the company's market value. Given that is a rather small percentage, it would probably be really easy for the company to fund another year's growth by issuing some new shares to investors, or even by taking out a loan.

Is Evolv Technologies Holdings' Cash Burn A Worry?

As you can probably tell by now, we're not too worried about Evolv Technologies Holdings' cash burn. For example, we think its revenue growth suggests that the company is on a good path. On this analysis its cash burn reduction was its weakest feature, but we are not concerned about it. Considering all the factors discussed in this article, we're not overly concerned about the company's cash burn, although we do think shareholders should keep an eye on how it develops. Taking an in-depth view of risks, we've identified 3 warning signs for Evolv Technologies Holdings that you should be aware of before investing.
