The final season of The Crown is finally here, and the batch of new episodes dive into the lives of a slew of different members of the British royal family, and most notably, the last few months of Princess Diana’s life.
As many people know, Diana was romantically involved with Dodi Al Fayed at the time of her death in August of 1997. But The Crown brings up some questions about how single he was when he met Diana. In the series, a woman named Kelly Fisher was engaged to Dodi before he got involved with Diana, and there’s a messy timeline linking his engagement and his jaunt on a yacht with Diana.
So, who is Kelly Fisher and where is she today? Here’s the deal.
Who is Kelly Fisher?
Kelly was born in Kentucky but spent part of her childhood in Toronto, she told Aiken Woman in 2014. Kelly became a model as a teenager and ended up dropping out of college to focus on her modeling career full-time. She appeared on the covers of Vogue, Elle, Cosmopolitan, and Marie Claire, according to Aiken Woman.
In July of 1996, Kelly met Dodi Al Fayed, son of wealthy businessman, Mohamed Al Fayed, and the two were romantically involved for a time after that, per The Washington Post.
Who plays Kelly in The Crown?
Kelly is played by Erin Richards in The Crown. According to IMDB, Erin has also appeared in the TV series Gotham, Misfits, and Crossing Lines, among other things.
Was she actually engaged to Dodi?
That question proves a point of contention: Kelly says yes; Dodi’s father, Mohamed Al Fayed, who died this year, said no.
During an inquest into Princess Diana’s death, Kelly said that Dodi had bought her a mansion in Malibu and that the two planned to live there after they got married, per Vanity Fair. The magazine also said that Kelly had “tentatively” set a wedding date for August 9, 1997. In The Crown's first episode of season 6, Kelly is depicted talking on the phone to Dodi, talking about their wedding, which is "three weeks away."
Kelly said during the inquest that she was with Dodi in Paris on July 14 when his father asked him to join him on his yacht, the Jonikal, where he was hosting Princess Diana and her children. Kelly stayed in Paris, but said she was flown to St. Tropez and stayed on another Al Fayed yacht. She also said that Dodi would visit her in the evenings.
She sued Dodi.
On August 10, 1997, photographs were published in the Sunday Mirror that showed Diana and Dodi embracing. Kelly went to Hollywood and hired attorney Gloria Allred to file a breach-of-contract suit against Dodi, according to Vanity Fair. Kelly also reportedly offered to meet with Diana, who didn’t respond to the invitation.
A few days later, Diana and Dodi were killed in a car crash in a Parisian tunnel, and Kelly withdrew her lawsuit.
She later married a pilot.
Kelly met pilot Mikhail Movshina on a safari in the Central African Republic, she told Aiken Woman. "He was working with the government to stop the Sudanese poachers from slaughtering the elephants for their tusks,” she said.
The couple ended up living together in Paris and then in Switzerland. The two eventually moved to Aiken, South Carolina, to be closer to her family.
She played a role in the inquest into Diana and Dodi’s deaths.
Transcripts of conversations between Kelly and Dodi were featured in the inquest into Princess Diana’s deaths, per ABC News. They feature a clearly distraught Kelly, who accuses Dodi of cheating on her.
"You even flew me down to St. Tropez to sit on a boat while you seduced Diana all day and f— me all night,” she said at one point, per ABC News. On another call, she said, “You are f—crazy. We were together the whole time. And you knew it.” (Dodi also called Kelly “hysterical” and said that they were broken up when he was with Diana. He also accused Kelly of totaling his car.)
Is Kelly Fisher still alive?
Yes, Kelly is still alive. she works as a property developer in South Carolina, according to The Sun. She and Mikhail had a daughter together. She’s also no longer in the public eye.
