Good start to the wrestling season for Mater Lakes Academy. Plus basketball and soccer results

Returning from a solid 2020-21 season and good off-season, the Mater Lakes Academy wrestling team was short-handed but still won the H-Town Throwdown at Hialeah Gardens High School.

The Bears, coached by Brandon Neifeld, celebrated three individual champions and several place finishers en route to the team title.

Champions: 113lbs. Anthony Odell; 145lbs. Azakin Sejour; HWT Ethan Vergara.

Runners-up: 126lbs. Emmanuel Celestin; 132lbs. Dylan Garcia; 170lbs. Calogero Mazzrillo.

3rd place: 160lbs. Eric Hodge; 220lbs. Damian Soto.

4th place: 106lbs. Kellen Mesina; 120lbs. Malikai Badillo; 152 lbs. Bryan Picallo.

Basketball

The Columbus boys’ basketball team (4-0) handed visiting district rival Miami High (3-1) its first loss of the season, 84-56.

The Explorers took a 12-point lead into halftime and maintained a 12-point lead when the third quarter ended. Columbus stepped up its attack in the fourth with sharpshooting freshman guard Benny Fragela making three of his six 3-pointers.

Freshmen Cameron and Cayden Boozer and Fragela combined for 64 points. Cayden Boozer scored 26 points inside the paint, while twin Cameron totaled 18 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks. Miami High senior forward Kuran Bryant led all scorers with 34 points.
