"Have a Good Life": The Best Reactions to Trump's Surreal Farewell

Trump's presidency might have been given a terminal diagnosis at the Four Seasons Total Landscaping last November, but it took its very last breath at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland today, as 45 made a farewell speech to a crowd of his family, fans and staff too scared to have already jumped ship.

Having become the first president since Nixon to miss successor's inauguration, Trump threw himself a goodbye party on a military airbase, with cannons firing and a curtain of 17 gold-fringed flags to make him still feel big and powerful. The departure of a president who broke so many norms was as surreal as you might expect, with rally favourites like "Gloria" and "YCMA" blaring out before and after Trump's speech.

It was a more dialled down Trump who tried to rattle through his accomplishments, listing achievements like the much derided Space Force and helping out vets. But he didn't miss an occasion to deflect blame and air falsehoods, blaming China for the virus, speaking about the pandemic in the past tense – the day after the country recorded 400,000 deaths – and making staggering claims about the great shape the country is in.

After terrorising the country for four years, the ominous line "have a good life, we will be back in some form" seems to reverberate from the heavens as in a horror movie.
