Goldman Sachs just named a new head of its giant tech division

Goldman Sachs just named a new chief information officer.

Elisha Wiesel will take on the role, which is currently held by the tatted-up former tech exec Marty Chavez, according to an internal memo signed by CEO Lloyd Blankfein, co-COOs David Solomon and Harvey Schwartz, and Chavez himself.

That's the first time we've seen that line-up of names on an internal memo since former COO Gary Cohn left the firm and Solomon and Schwartz took over as co-COOs.

Chavez will become chief financial officer of the global investment bank in April.

Wiesel — who is currently chief risk officer for the securities division and global head of securities division desk strategists — will oversee the entire tech division, which is the largest within the firm by headcount, as well as the engineers and strategists embedded in other parts of the firm.

The total engineer population is about 11,000 people.

Wiesel is the son of the writer, Nobel Laureate, and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel. He joined the firm in 1994 in the J. Aron division — the same group where Blankfein and Cohn started out — and made partner in 2004.

"‪Elisha will set the firm's technology strategy and standards, further modernize our technology platforms and work with businesses to leverage technology to realize our commercial objectives," the memo read.

"As market, regulation and technology risks evolve, Elisha will lead our efforts to ensure that we deploy effective technology to address our clients' needs."

The technology division head, Don Duet, meanwhile, will be leaving after 28 years with Goldman Sachs. John Madsen and Umesh Subramanian will become coheads of the tech division in his stead, and will report to Wiesel.

Duet "is a recognized global leader in financial services technology and thought leader in open source, automation and cloud computing, and has taken innovative approaches to solving problems, creating efficiencies and building new technology," Chavez wrote in an internal memo.

He joined the firm in 1988 and worked in London, Frankfurt, and Tokyo before returning to New York. He recently led the firm's creation of App Bank, a machine-learning initiative, and helped develop Symphony, a cloud-based communications platform.

Before being named tech division cohead, Madsen was global head of the enterprise platform team. He joined the firm in 2003 and made partner in 2014. Umesh was global head of the finance engineering team. He also made partner in 2014, after joining the firm in 2005.
