Gas prices tumble in Vancouver, luxury sports car sales rev up in Canada

Gas prices in Vancouver tumbled this week, a lone beacon of savings among Canadian cities, where prices mainly held flat. Regular gasoline in Van City fell nearly eight cents per litre between Jan. 4 and Jan. 11, according to pump prices from the data firm Kalibrate.

Across Canada, the average price was lower by less than a cent, at $1.449. Gatineau, Que., saw the biggest increase over the past seven days, with prices rising 8.7 cents per litre, while prices across the river in Ottawa fell by one cent per litre.

Entering the winter driving season, cold-weather fuel blends typically lower pump prices. However, this is also the time of year when refineries undergo maintenance, reducing supply.

Data released Wednesday by the U.S. Energy Information Administration show gasoline inventories reached their highest level in a year last week.

"Gasoline prices will come under pressure," Andy Lipow of Lipow Oil Associates told Yahoo Finance on Wednesday.

That's good news for the rev-happy Canadian drivers who fuelled a 48.2 per cent sales increase in luxury sports cars last year. DesRosiers Automotive Consultants say gains were "especially significant" for the Chevrolet Corvette and Nissan Z.

"Always a small and volatile segment heavily influenced by product life cycles, luxury sports cars bucked the trend of decreasing passenger car sales," analysts wrote in a report on Thursday. "The more mass-market oriented sport car segment also noted a significant increase of 27.5 per cent."
