Gas prices stuck in neutral as refiners cut production

Gas prices stayed in neutral this week across Canada. A fuel industry expert says "listless" demand and reluctant refiners have blunted the typical summer spike at the pumps.

The average cost per litre of regular fuel in cities nationwide climbed 0.3 cents between July 25 and August 1, according to data from Kalibrate. While prices were little changed across most of Canada, Abbotsford, B.C. saw the largest increase at six cents per litre. Drivers in Brandon, Man. caught the biggest discount, a 4.3 cents per litre drop.

En-Pro’s chief petroleum analyst Roger McKnight says U.S. inflation is weighing on typical summer demand, and refiners have responded by cutting production.

"As far as the refining calendar is concerned, to them, the driving season is over. Heck, it didn’t even start!" he wrote in a recent blog post.

"Combine anaemic consumer demand with low pump prices and falling refining margins, and the only option for the industry is to lower refinery runs and create an artificial increase in demand just by lowering the amount of gasoline and diesel they produce," he added.

"Look for prices to play possum until the U.S. inflation fires have been doused out."
