Gas prices rise in the Prairies and B.C. amid wildfires
Gas prices jumped over the past week, with prices increasing in the Prairies and British Columbia, as wildfires ravage parts of Western Canada including Jasper, Alta.
The average cost per litre of regular fuel in cities across the country climbed 0.6 cents between July 18 and July 25, according to data from Kalibrate. While Thunder Bay, Ont. saw the biggest weekly jump in gas prices, the vast majority of cities in Ontario saw prices dip or stay the same. In the Prairies, however, prices spiked, with Regina, Sask., Red Deer, Alta. and Brandon, Man. seeing the biggest increases. B.C., which had 362 active wildfires burning as of Thursday afternoon, the most in the country, also saw prices broadly go up.
The biggest price breaks came in Trois Riviere, Que., North Bay, Ont., and Yellowknife, N.W.T.
The price shift comes as approximately 25,000 people were evacuated from the town of Jasper and Jasper National Park this week due to a massive wildfire. As of Thursday evening, Jasper received some rainfall which helped to limit any further spread of the fire.
Most importantly, there have been no reported injuries as the result of the Jasper Complex Wildfire. Approximately 25,000 people were safely evacuated from the town of Jasper and Jasper National Park. All residents, visitors and responders are safe.
