Gas prices fall in Canada, led by British Columbia and Alberta

Gas prices moved lower across most of Canada, providing relief to drivers eager to take advantage of summer weather. The biggest price drops over the past seven days were in Abbotsford, B.C., and Sherbrooke, Que.

According to data firm Kalibrate, the average cost per litre of regular fuel in cities nationwide fell 1.2 cents to $1.685 between May 23 and May 30. Canada's Maritimes was the lone region to experience modest gains. In Ontario, price spikes occurred in North Bay and Sudbury.

Last month, motor vehicle and parts dealers bucked a broader trend of slowing retail sales. According to data from Statistics Canada, sales at new car dealers led this gain, while used car dealers saw sales decline.

A new J.D. Power survey released this week suggests Canadian consumers prefer petrol-power over electricity. The results show 72 per cent of automobile shoppers are either "very unlikely" or "somewhat unlikely" to consider an electric vehicle (EV) for their next purchase.

A separate analysis by Yahoo Finance Canada found the annual cost of charging an EV varies significantly across the country, just like gas prices. Quebec is the cheapest region for charging, thanks to lower electricity rates. Alberta was the most expensive province, due to higher power prices there. Nunavut and the Northwest Territories topped the list.
