Gas prices climb in Canada, Ford trucks the top-selling vehicle for 14 years
Gas prices climbed this week across Canada, with Saskatoon booking the biggest increase among cities nationwide.
The price of a litre of regular gasoline in Saskatoon jumped 14.2 cents between Jan. 11 and Jan. 18, helping to bring the average price up by 1.8 cents to $1.467. The increase comes as cold weather sets in across Canada, which often lowers demand from leisure travel.
Sarnia, Ont. saw the biggest drop at the pumps over the past seven days, with prices falling by 5.5 cents per litre.
South of the border, rising gasoline prices contributed to a hotter-than-expected inflation reading in December. However, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics notes prices actually fell 5.8 per cent last month when adjusting for seasonality.
Back in Canada, the Ford F-Series continues to dominate new vehicle sales. DesRosiers Automotive Consultants says the popular pick-up has been top choice for Canadian buyers for 14 consecutive years as of 2023. Meanwhile, sales of sedans and hatchbacks continue to fall, according to their data.
“With the balance of sales continuing to shift ever further in favour of light trucks, the top-selling passenger cars only reached a fraction of the volume of the top-selling trucks, with even the best-selling passenger cars largely seeing sales decreases for the year,” said managing partner Andrew King earlier this week.
