Gas prices in Canadian cities extend drop this week

Average retail cost of regular gasoline fell 4.5 cents per litre between Oct. 5 and Oct. 12

Gas prices dropped in virtually all major Canadian cities this week, with Vancouver bucking the trend with a 1.7 cent jump over the past seven days.

According to pump prices from more than 70 cities compiled by data firm Kalibrate, the average retail cost of regular gasoline fell 4.5 cents per litre between Oct. 5 and Oct. 12 to $1.567. The decline follows a 7.2 cent drop last week. Abbotsford, B.C. booked the biggest pullback this week, with prices falling 18.5 cents to $1.714.

Looking back to September, a consumer spending report from Royal Bank released Thursday flagged gasoline among the few categories where Canadians actually spent more amid broad-based economic belt-tightening.

In the United States, prices have retreated from their September highs, a positive sign for the Federal Reserve's battle against inflation.

"At long last, the decline in gas prices that we’ve been waiting to see has arrived, and the locomotive of falling prices has only recently started on a downhill, gaining momentum," Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, noted earlier this week.

"However, some new cautionary signs have emerged with the recent attacks on Israel, potentially destabilizing a sensitive region," he added. "I’m hopeful the violence won’t spread, limiting the impact of these falling gas prices."

En-Pro International chief petroleum analyst Roger McKnight said on Wednesday that he has yet to see evidence of interruptions to the physical supply of crude or its refined derivatives.
