Gas prices: Average declines hit the brakes in Canada this week, truck sales break record in 2023

Gas prices were virtually flat in most Canadian cities over the past week, with increases in Alberta offsetting modestly lower rates elsewhere.

According to prices from more than 70 cities compiled by data firm Kalibrate, the average retail cost of regular gasoline fell 0.1 cents per litre to $1.456 between Dec. 28. and Jan. 4. The even-keeled weekly reading at Canadian gas pumps comes as analysts forecast higher prices in the months ahead.

That said, price predictions for commodities linked to crude oil could be quickly upended by escalating geopolitical drama in the Middle East. So far, the oil price (CL=F) reaction has been muted. On Thursday, rising U.S. gasoline stockpiles overshadowed supply concerns, including the disruption of a major Libyan oil field.

Meanwhile, consumer confidence in affordable fuel prices was on full display in the 2023 auto sales figures from DesRosiers Automotive Consultants. The report says last year saw the biggest year-over-year increase in sales since 1997.

“Of the many remarkable aspects of 2023’s performance, one of the most notable was the continued gain in light truck share," managing partner Andrew King wrote in the report released Wednesday. "Light trucks continued to push out an ever-shrinking pool of passenger cars, with trucks reaching a record share of 85.8 per cent for the year, as Canadian consumers enjoyed the freedom to choose the vehicles they want to purchase.”
