Gas-Powered Porsche Cayenne Will Reach 2030s, Keep V-8 Engine Alive

  • Porsche has confirmed that the third-generation Cayenne will live alongside the upcoming electric fourth-generation model into the 2030s.

  • The gas Cayenne will continue to be updated after receiving major changes for 2024.

  • Porsche will center its efforts around improving the efficiency of the Cayenne's V-8 engine.

Porsche's lineup of electric vehicles is about to get a lot more crowded. The Taycan, first launched back in 2020, will be joined by the new electric Macan crossover later this year. Porsche is also preparing an electric replacement for the 718 Cayman and Boxster sports cars and last year confirmed that the Cayenne SUV will also go EV. But Porsche won't put all of its eggs in one basket, announcing that the Cayenne will continue to be offered with both hybrid and pure internal-combustion variants past 2030.

Porsche isn't planning to rest on its laurels either. Not only will the third generation of the Cayenne remain on sale alongside the electric fourth-generation model, Porsche says the gas-drinking Cayenne will continue to receive comprehensive updates. Porsche's main focus, the company revealed, will be improved efficiency of the V-8 engine in order to ensure that the twin-turbocharged powertrain will be capable of meeting future regulations.

The Cayenne just received a major overhaul for 2024, adopting a sleeker design, a revised dashboard, and more horsepower across the lineup. The S trim also saw its twin-turbo V-6 replaced with a twin-turbo V-8, pointing towards Porsche's commitment to the eight-cylinder powertrain.

Still, Porsche is aiming for more than 80 percent of its deliveries to be fully electric in 2030. But the company has a caveat, saying this is "depending on the demand of our customers and the development of electromobility in the regions of the world." The Cayenne EV is due by the middle of this decade, and it will ride on a version of the 800-volt Premium Platform Electric (PPE) that also underpins the electric Macan and a host of upcoming Audis.

Porsche has begun its test program for the next-generation Cayenne, and camouflaged EV prototypes are already prowling the street. Porsche says that by the time that the Cayenne EV is ready to be launched, the automaker will have completed several million test miles across the globe.
