Frozen Ocean: This "Slurpee" Wave in Nantucket Is Amazing

Craving a Slurpee yet? This slushy wave is a little salty for our tastes. (Jonathan Nimerfroh)

In so many ways this crazy deep freeze has been like bad joke — frozen Niagara Falls? Really? And now there’s a new phenomenon to gasp at: the Slurpee wave! Surfer and photographer Jonathan Nimerfroh captured this amazing picture of slushy waves in Nantucket, Mass.

According to Nimerfroh, “[It’s] just been super cold here. The harbor to the main land is frozen solid. No boats running,” he says. “The day after I took these, it actually froze up the shoreline for 200 yards out. Solid ice.”

Temperatures continue to dip below freezing in the Northeast (teens in places like New York City and as low as single digits in Chicago). States of emergency have been declared in the In the South as another round of unusually cold, snowy and icy weather hits the area.

Stay warm!
