Freshwater Turtles Are the Focus of the Latest HWW PSA

PSA Profiles All Canadian Freshwater Turtles

OTTAWA, ON--(Marketwired - June 05, 2014) - Just in time for Rivers to Oceans Week, from June 8th to the 14th, the Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF) proudly announces that freshwater turtles are the focus of the next public service announcement in the Hinterland Who's Who (HWW) series.

This new PSA will highlight and show each of the eight native species of freshwater turtles living in Canada. These long-lived reptiles inhabit a wide variety of aquatic and terrestrial habitats from coast to coast. Indeed, freshwater turtles all need both land and water to survive and complete their life cycle. While turtles have been on Earth for over 200 million years, surviving major events like the extinction of the dinosaurs, these days, they face a new threat: human activity. Each Canadian species of freshwater turtle is either at risk or has populations that are at risk. Learning more about them is a great start towards their conservation!

"CWF is involved in great initiatives to help conserve freshwater turtles throughout Canada," says Wade Luzny, CEO and Executive Vice-President of CWF. "This new HWW video is part of these efforts and will be instrumental in informing Canadians on these fascinating animals. It will surely inspire all to take action towards the long-term survival of each species."

The Freshwater Turtles PSA focuses on the species natural history and presents interesting facts and amazing imagery. You can view this new PSA at HWW.ca. A new fact sheet containing more in-depth information on the species will be published in June 2014 on HWW.ca.

About Hinterland Who's Who

First created in 1963, HWW made bold use of a relatively new medium -- black and white television -- to reach the Canadian general public. The new Hinterland Who's Who, launched in 2003, serves to rebuild the connection thousands of viewers made with wildlife through the original series and ensure that wildlife remains part of what it means to be Canadian. Visit the Hinterland Who's Who Web site at: HWW.ca.

Hinterlands Who's Who is a joint program of the Canadian Wildlife Federation and Environment Canada. Together, they bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the series. Hinterland Who's Who has been bringing Canadians closer to our wilderness heritage for 50 years.
