Former Lawrence resident misses out on medals in Olympic 100-meter breaststroke final

Team USA swimmer Michael Andrew, who previously lived and trained in Lawrence, placed fourth in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke final Sunday night at the Olympics in Tokyo.

The event was won by Adam Peaty of Great Britain, the world record holder who seized his second straight Olympic gold medal in a time of 57.37. The Netherlands’ Arno Kamminga (58.00) won silver while Nicolo Martinenghi (58.33) of Italy earned bronze.

The American record holder in the event, Andrew was fourth at the turn but was ultimately passed in the final 50 meters by Martinenghi. Andrew had won his preliminary heat and had the fifth-best time out of the semifinal round Saturday. He was one of two Americans in the final along with Andrew Wilson.

Andrew, who moved to Lawrence in 2011, has since left the area. He now lives and trains in Encinitas, California. He’ll race in one more event in Tokyo, the 200 individual medley, beginning with his prelim heats at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday on NBCOlympics.com.
