Forecast: Analysts Think Alamos Gold Inc.'s (TSE:AGI) Business Prospects Have Improved Drastically

Shareholders in Alamos Gold Inc. (TSE:AGI) may be thrilled to learn that the analysts have just delivered a major upgrade to their near-term forecasts. The analysts greatly increased their revenue estimates, suggesting a stark improvement in business fundamentals.

Following the upgrade, the current consensus from Alamos Gold's four analysts is for revenues of US$1.2b in 2024 which - if met - would reflect a meaningful 17% increase on its sales over the past 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are presumed to bounce 39% to US$0.73. Previously, the analysts had been modelling revenues of US$1.0b and earnings per share (EPS) of US$0.60 in 2024. So we can see there's been a pretty clear increase in analyst sentiment in recent times, with both revenues and earnings per share receiving a decent lift in the latest estimates.

Although the analysts have upgraded their earnings estimates, there was no change to the consensus price target of US$17.65, suggesting that the forecast performance does not have a long term impact on the company's valuation. That's not the only conclusion we can draw from this data however, as some investors also like to consider the spread in estimates when evaluating analyst price targets. Currently, the most bullish analyst values Alamos Gold at US$20.24 per share, while the most bearish prices it at US$13.61. This shows there is still some diversity in estimates, but analysts don't appear to be totally split on the stock as though it might be a success or failure situation.

Another way we can view these estimates is in the context of the bigger picture, such as how the forecasts stack up against past performance, and whether forecasts are more or less bullish relative to other companies in the industry. The analysts are definitely expecting Alamos Gold's growth to accelerate, with the forecast 17% annualised growth to the end of 2024 ranking favourably alongside historical growth of 8.8% per annum over the past five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in a similar industry are forecast to grow their revenue at 11% per year. Factoring in the forecast acceleration in revenue, it's pretty clear that Alamos Gold is expected to grow much faster than its industry.

The Bottom Line

The biggest takeaway for us from these new estimates is that analysts upgraded their earnings per share estimates, with improved earnings power expected for this year. They also upgraded their revenue estimates for this year, and sales are expected to grow faster than the wider market. The lack of change in the price target is puzzling, but with a serious upgrade to this year's earnings expectations, it might be time to take another look at Alamos Gold.

Even so, the longer term trajectory of the business is much more important for the value creation of shareholders. We have estimates - from multiple Alamos Gold analysts - going out to 2026, and you can see them free on our platform here.
