  • The long-awaited movie telling about the Ford/Ferrari matchup at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966 is coming out later this year.

  • Tom Cruise had once been tipped to play Carroll Shelby, but Matt Damon will actually take the role in the movie.

  • The release date, announced by Walt Disney Studios, is November 15, 2019.

It seems like we've been hearing about a movie covering Ford vs. Ferrari at Le Mans in the 1960s for years, but now, it finally has a release date. Walt Disney Studios, following its recent acquisition of Fox's film business, have announced that Ford v. Ferrari will be released on November 15, 2019.

Back in 2013, it was first revealed that Tom Cruise had been tapped to play Carroll Shelby in a movie adaptation of A.J. Baime's book Go Like Hell. That didn't happen, and it wasn't until last year we learned that Logan director James Mangold was hired to helm the film. And while Fox did have the rights to Baime's book, Variety reported last year that Go Like Hell would be adapted into a TV show, while the Ford v. Ferrari movie would get a new screenplay.

Ford v. Ferrari will star Christian Bale as Ken Miles, the Shelby test driver and racer who helped develop the Ford GT40 Mk II, and Matt Damon as Carroll Shelby. It focuses on the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, where Henry Ford II, spurned by a failed takeover of Ferrari, exacts his revenge on the Italian company by beating them at Le Mans. With the GT40 MkII, Ford locked out all three steps of the podium, embarrassing Ferrari at a race it had come to dominate in previous years. Ferrari got its revenge at the 1967 Daytona 24 Hours, locking out the podium with a gorgeous trio of prototypes, but that's a story for a later date.

Here is the trailer for the upcoming film, released on June 2:
