The flower moon will shine over SC soon. Here’s when and what to know

Collins Doughtie/Special to The Island Packet/ The Beaufort Gazette

May’s full moon is nicknamed the flower moon.

For those who look forward to their monthly habit of gazing at a full moon, this month’s astronomical event will occur on Friday at 1:34 p.m. for South Carolina residents, according to timeanddate.

Since this month’s full moon will be below the horizon during its peak illumination, plan to make your way outside on the nights of Thursday or Friday to view the full flower moon.

This full moon is one of the 13 full moons that will occur throughout this year.

Why is it called the flower moon?

Since each full moon is generally named after certain events that take place on the given month, it may not be a surprise that May’s full moon is named after the many spring flowers that bloom this month, detailed the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

What is a full moon?

Earth’s moon takes approximately 30 days or one month, to revolve around the Earth. This is called a lunar cycle, according to NASA.
