All five Dallas-Fort Worth area Alamo Drafthouse cinemas are closed. Here’s why

Amanda McCoy/amccoy@star-telegram.com

All five Alamo Drafthouse Cinema locations in North Texas have closed.

The five theaters that have closed are spread out across the Metroplex, with one in Richardson, one in Denton, one in Irving and two in Dallas. The cinema chain is known not only for showing new movies, but hosting themed events and retro screenings.

The closures stems from Two is One, One is None, LLC filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, according to WFAA. The company is a franchisee with Alamo, who operated the five Dallas-Fort Worth area locations and one in Woodbury, Minnesota, which also closed.

Two is One said “an effort was made to contact all 600-plus employees” before the closures were announced.

“We are deeply saddened to find it necessary to take this step,” Two is One told WFAA. “We are grateful to all our employees who put in the work, day in and day out to produce a special movie-going experience and to our many loyal customers for whom it was a pleasure to provide such a special experience.”

As for why Two is One opted to pull the plug on its Alamo locations, the company said it was a mix of factors.

Industry-wide guest counts not rebounding to pre-COVID pandemic levels and the overall box office being down this year are key contributors, the company said. A finger was also pointed to the writer’s and actor’s strikes of last year as to why the previous two quarters of moviegoing have been slow for theaters.

“In fact, the first quarter of 2024 has been the worst performing quarter in movie-going history,” the company told WFAA.

Not long after the news of the North Texas theater closures was announced Thursday morning, Alamo Drafthouse released the following statement:

“We are very disappointed to learn today that our franchisee, which operates five locations in Dallas-Fort Worth, TX and one in Woodbury, MN has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and is closing their business effective immediately,” an Alamo Drafthouse spokesperson told the Star-Telegram. “We are heartbroken for the franchisee’s teammates and the local film communities, however, we are working as quickly as possible to get Alamo Drafthouse Cinema back up and running in these cities. All other Alamo Drafthouse locations are operating as normal, with continued expansion plans across the country.”

Alamo Drafthouse opened its first North Texas theater in Richardson in August 2013.

Over the decade plus since, the theater chain expanded its Metroplex presence heavily and at one point had six theaters operating in North Texas. A North Richland Hills location opened in 2019, but closed just a few years later in 2022.

Alamo Drafthouse opened its first theater in Austin in the late ‘90s, expanding into over a dozen states since.

Despite the closures, Alamo Drafthouse still has a large presence in the Lone Star State with locations in Austin, Corpus Christi, El Paso, Houston, Laredo, Lubbock and San Antonio.
