First trailer for Sheridan Smith's new movie The Railway Children Return

The Railway Children Return's first trailer has arrived, offering a new preview into the sequel to the classic 1970 film adaptation of the E Nesbit novel.

The new movie stars Gavin & Stacey and Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps star Sheridan Smith alongside Call the Midwife star Jenny Agutter, who is reprising her role of Roberta 'Bobbie' Waterbury from the 1970 film.

The cast also includes Game of Thrones' John Bradley, Little Dorrit's Tom Courtenay, and the new generation of Railway Children: Beau Gadson, Eden Hamilton, Austin Haines, Zac Cudby and KJ Aikens.

StudioCanal released the trailer, which you can check out above, on Wednesday (October 27) teasing that the film will be released in cinemas in 2022.

Similar to the original film and the books that inspired them, the trailer shows the new Railway Children boarding a train to escape the perils of war and live with a family in the countryside. Their new home is with Bobbie, who used to be one of the Railway Children herself.

The official synopsis reads: "Picking up nearly forty years after the events of the original film, The Railway Children Return will take audiences on an exciting and heart-warming journey, in which a new group of children are evacuated to a Yorkshire village during World War 2, where they encounter a young soldier, who like them, is far away from home…"

The movie is directed by Morgan Matthews, who has previously directed various television documentaries, including When Harry Left Hogwarts and Shooting Bigfoot. He was also behind British drama film X+Y (known in the US as A Brilliant Young Mind) starring Sex Education's Asa Butterfield.

The Railway Children Return's screenplay was written by BAFTA-winner Danny Brocklehurst, who has written several successful television screenplays including Brassic, Shameless and The Stretford Wives.

The Railway Children Returns will be released in cinemas in 2022.
