Felicity Huffman Says She 'Wouldn't Be Able' to Play Her Oscar-Nominated “Transamerica ”Role Today

“I think we should reflect the audience, and that’s got to include everybody," she said of the movie industry

Felicity Huffman is addressing whether she'd take on a transgender role again today, nearly 20 years after Transamerica.

The actress, 61, told The Guardian that playing a transgender character, like she did in the 2005 film Transamerica that earned her an Oscar nomination, is something she "wouldn’t be able to do now."

“I think we should reflect the audience, and that’s got to include everybody,” Huffman said. “There has been such inequity for so long, and now the pendulum must swing the other way. But I hope it leads to a situation where anyone can play anything.”

In 2014, Huffman spoke on cisgender performers playing transgender roles, telling HuffPost at the time, “I certainly understand the sentiment that a trans actor should play a trans role. And I support it."

"What can I say," she added, "I think transgender people have been marginalized for a long time, and I think you see that in people who are not trans playing them."

Back in 2005, Huffman told Entertainment Weekly she had difficulties obtaining roles because she was told she wasn’t “pretty” enough. She said at the time that casting agents had told her, ”You’re so good, but you’re just not pretty,” adding, ”And I actually appreciated their candor. They weren’t saying it to be mean. They just didn’t want me to think I wasn’t right because I couldn’t act.

She noted that that was partially why she was given the lead role in Transamerica, as the directors wanted someone “completely without vanity.” ”No kudos for me,” Huffman told EW at the time. ”I was never a beauty, so it was never something I had to safeguard.”

Huffman, who previously spent 11 days in prison for her involvement in the college admissions scandal, is next set to star on stage in the U.K. production of Hir at the Park Theatre on Feb. 15. In the play, she stars as the mother of a trans child.
