If EPS Growth Is Important To You, Vista Outdoor (NYSE:VSTO) Presents An Opportunity

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Vista Outdoor (NYSE:VSTO). While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.

How Fast Is Vista Outdoor Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Vista Outdoor has undergone a massive growth in earnings per share over the last three years. So much so that this three year growth rate wouldn't be a fair assessment of the company's future. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Vista Outdoor boosted its trailing twelve month EPS from US$6.68 to US$7.96, in the last year. That's a 19% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. EBIT margins for Vista Outdoor remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 22% to US$3.2b. That's progress.

Are Vista Outdoor Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It should give investors a sense of security owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, creating a close alignment their interests. Shareholders will be pleased by the fact that insiders own Vista Outdoor shares worth a considerable sum. As a matter of fact, their holding is valued at US$24m. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Even though that's only about 1.5% of the company, it's enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.

Is Vista Outdoor Worth Keeping An Eye On?

One important encouraging feature of Vista Outdoor is that it is growing profits. To add an extra spark to the fire, significant insider ownership in the company is another highlight. These two factors are a huge highlight for the company which should be a strong contender your watchlists. You should always think about risks though.
