If EPS Growth Is Important To You, Diana Shipping (NYSE:DSX) Presents An Opportunity

The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Impressively, Diana Shipping's EPS catapulted from US$0.64 to US$1.15, over the last year. It's a rarity to see 81% year-on-year growth like that. Shareholders will be hopeful that this is a sign of the company reaching an inflection point.

It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Diana Shipping shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 29% to 48%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

It should give investors a sense of security owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, creating a close alignment their interests.
