Emmy-winning Writer/Producer Joe Keenan Lists Big Spread Above Studio City

SELLER: Joe Keenan
LOCATION: Studio City, CA
PRICE: $6,750,000
SIZE: 5,297 square feet, 3 bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms

YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Five-time Emmy-winning writer-producer Joe Keenan hoisted his picturesque estate in the hills above Studio City, CA, on the open market with an asking price of $6,750,000. Property records show Mister Keenan and his long-time partner Gerry Bernardi acquired the residence in July 1997 for $1.5 million and about three years later coughed up another $625,000 for the house next door that, as best as this property gossip can tell from our careful but admittedly unscientific research, does not as of this morning appear to be for sale with or separately from larger estate.

Mister Keenan, in case you’re not familiar, got his big showbiz break in the mid-1990s when he was hired to write for the screamingly successful and long-running sitcom “Frasier,” which he also later co-executive produced. He went on to write and produce for “Desperate Housewives,” served as a consulting producer for “Glee” and he co-created and currently writes and produces the Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon starring re-boot of “The Odd Couple,” a 1965 play by Neil Simon that was remade into the iconic Tony Randall and Jack Klugman starring 1970s sitcom of the same name.

The white clapboard and stucco-sided modified Colonial, originally built in the late 1930s and measuring in at a comfortably spacious but by today’s standard hardly huge 5,297-square-feet per online marketing materials with three bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms, presides over a gated, and uncommonly private 1.48-acre promontory with a between-the-trees view over the San Fernando Valley from the raised front porch. An angle entrance gallery opens to the central courtyard and leads to a formal living room with fireplace and two walls of nearly floor-to-ceiling windows as well as the adjacent, fully paneled formal dining room that has another fireplace, this one set at an angle to the room. An extra-wide, well-equipped and clearly carefully maintained if still outmoded looking galley kitchen opens to an informal dining area the homeowner’s somewhat fussily furnished as a lounge with no-doubt impressively pedigreed Art Deco sofa and chairs. A nearby family room has a dining table set into a wide bay window along with a third fireplace flanked by French doors that provide garden access.

There are two en suite guest bedrooms, at least one of which has a private sitting room. A double office and a private library — where Mister Keenan keeps his trove of Emmys — shares the second floor with the master suite that generously encompasses a triple-exposure bedroom with fireplace and wet bar, a roomy custom walk-in closet lined with glass-fronted wardrobes, and a decadent, Biedermeier inspired bathroom that looks like it could have been ripped right out of grandest suite of a 1930s ocean liner.

The residence wraps crab-like around a lush, tropically landscaped courtyard and the second floor hovers over a flagstone-paved lanai furnished with dining area and fireplace warmed lounge area. The rear of the house opens to a flat yard with thick lawns, mature gardens, and a rather photogenic oval swimming pool and separate spa.
