Dr. Fauci 'never would have imagined' such public outrage towards him

On Tuesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Dr. Anthony Fauci discussed the public outrage he experienced while working on the COVID-19 task force. Fauci is the director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the chief medical advisor to the president. He was also publicly disregarded by former President Trump on multiple occasions.

“I never would have imagined when I was training in medicine,” Fauci said, “That we would reach a situation where there would be such extraordinary divisiveness in the country.”

The infectious disease expert was hounded for his science-based health recommendations. He was even the victim of multiple death threats. And while he has gotten used to being a public enemy to some, he doesn't really understand the animosity.

“I consider the country as my patient, metaphorically, where [I] really want to take care of them,” Fauci said, “It was a real jolt and a shock early on, when you get completely criticized and attacked because you're saying things that is trying to save the lives and preserve the health of people.”

Jimmy Kimmel Live airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on ABC.
