Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq hit fresh record highs

Looks like another one for the record books as all three indices hit new highs, on the same day. Catch The Final Round with Jen Rogers and Yahoo Finance Editor-in-Chief Andy Serwer.

Winners and losers

Stocks lower to start the week include Endo International as traders take profits from Friday’s big earnings jump, IT security provider CyberArk Software on a Goldman downgrade, and Salesforce.com — the world’s largest provider of CRM software — slipping on cautious commentary from Piper Jaffray analysts, claiming checks found a “somewhat lighter new business quarter than prior periods.” Shares are down 3%.

Stocks on the move higher today include Valeant as Mizuho upgraded the drugmaker citing in part optimistic guidance, real estate investment trust Post Properties on its buyout from rival Mid America Apartment, as the two companies focus on apartments in Sunbelt states, and Deckers Outdoor — shares of the maker of Teva sandals and UGG boots up as Telsey Advisory group upgraded it to “outperform,” citing favorable weather trends.

Whale Watching

Get out your binoculars. It’s 13-F filing season, meaning Wall Street’s biggest whales have to report what they’re holding as of the end of the 2nd quarter. Here with the latest is Yahoo Finance’s Julia LaRoche.

Looking ahead

  • It will be a data-heavy day starting at 8:30 a.m. Eastern as we’ll get an important read on inflation with CPI data for July. Economists are expecting the core ready, less food and energy, to rise 0.2% month over month.

  • Also at 8:30 a.m., the government will release housing starts for July. The street’s looking for a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.18 million new starts.

  • And in Rio tomorrow, reigning Olympic champion and current world champion Christian Taylor competes for Team USA in the triple jump, while Devon Allen is expected in the 110m hurdles final, and Usain Bolt and Justin Gatlin are back in action in the 200m heats after winning gold and silver in the 100m. And in the final day of artistic gymnastics, Team USA superstars Simone Biles and Aly Raisman compete in the finals of the women’s floor.
