Donald Trump has said the political movement he created “is only just beginning” as the outgoing president gave his farewell address.

Mr Trump said he will "pray for the success" of Joe Biden's administration, but he did not mention his successor by name or congratulate him.

The outgoing president said the country had been "horrified" by the rioting by his supporters at the Capitol in Washington DC earlier this month.

"Political violence is an attack on everything we cherish as Americans. It can never be tolerated,” Mr Trump said in his farewell message on Tuesday.

"As I prepare to hand power over to a new administration at noon on Wednesday, I want you to know that the movement we started is only just beginning."

Meanwhile, president-elect Mr Biden landed at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, after bidding farewell to his home state of Delaware.

Mr Biden will spend the night at the presidential guest house Blair House before his inauguration on Wednesday.

Under his leadership, President Trump claimed the US had "revitalised our alliances and rallied the nations of the world to stand up to China like never before".

He said: "As a result of our bold diplomacy and principled realism, we achieved a series of historic peace deals in the Middle East.

“It is the dawn of a new Middle East and we are bringing our soldiers home."

He also said he was "especially proud" to be the first president in decades who has "started no new wars”.

Referring to the riot at the US Capitol on January 6, he said: "All Americans were horrified by the assault on the Capitol... It can never be tolerated."

Currently locked out of his personal social media accounts, Mr Trump’s video was recorded on Monday and released via the government's official social media.

"We did what we came here to do - and so much more," he said.

"I took on the tough battles, the hardest fights, the most difficult choices – because that’s what you elected me to do."

Mr Trump’s speech was released on the last full day of his presidency, and as the US exceeded 400,000 coronavirus deaths.
