Disney Sets Opening Day for Shanghai Resort

Shanghai Disney Resort will open its doors to its first guests on June 16, Disney and Shanghai Shendi Group announced Tuesday.

The grand opening of the entertainment conglomerate’s latest theme park will come at the end of a multi-day celebration. The resort is located in the Pudong District of Shanghai and is the first Disney destination in mainland China.

Disney chief executive Robert Iger touted the new park as “a one-of-a-kind, world-class destination that is authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese.” He said it will include “Disney’s legendary storytelling along with China’s rich culture, and showcases some of the most creative and innovative experiences we’ve ever created.”

The conglomerate and Shanghai Shendi Group announced expanded plans for the park in 2014, following on the huge growth of tourism in China — adding more attractions, entertainment and other offerings. The park on opening day will include a Disneyland that will have six “lands” — Adventure Isle, Gardens of Imagination, Mickey Avenue, Tomorrowland, Treasure Cove and Fantasyland, centered on Disney’s trademark Enchanted Storybook Castle. (The castle will be the largest and tallest of any Disney theme park.)

There will also be a Disneyland Hotel and Toy Story Hotel, a shopping and entertainment feature called Disneytown and a recreational area with gardens, paths and a lake — Wishing Star Park.

The resort is billed as the largest foreign investment project in Shanghai and one of the largest in China’s history.
