Diehard 49ers Fan Jeremy Renner Is 'Over the Moon' About Super Bowl Chances: 'There Is No Plan B' (Exclusive)

Renner, who is starring in a Super Bowl ad this year for Silk, says it's "pretty awesome" to be able to root for a team like the Niners

Jeremy Renner has full faith in his beloved San Francisco 49ers!

The actor, 53, is a diehard Niners fan — and after a nail biting comeback victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday, he’s ready to watch his team take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII.

“I am over the moon about it,” Renner told PEOPLE in January about the Niners’ odds at a Super Bowl victory. “It’s a very good chance for us and we’ve got a great squad and we’re healthy. So unlike last year, [when] all fell apart for us, which is heartbreaking.”

The team’s 2022 season, notable for the breakthrough of rookie quarterback Brock Purdy, saw them make it to the playoffs, though they were eliminated by the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship amid various player injuries.

Now, though, things have turned around, and Renner, who is starring in a Super Bowl ad this year for Silk, said he’s all in a 49ers win.

“It’s good to have a squad to root for like the Niners, man. It’s pretty awesome,” he said. “I don’t have a plan B. There is no plan B. That means you’re planning to fail. It’s the same thing in my career — I never planned on doing anything else. I was always like, that’s a plan to fail, I suppose.”

He continued, “There is no failing, and same with recovery. It’s like if I was to plan on dying. I’m getting better, you know what I mean? It’s just sort of like an attitude I have. So with the Niners, they’re not going to lose. Don’t have to plan for that.”

Though Renner is currently in Pittsburgh filming the third season of his Paramount+ thriller Mayor of Kingstown, he has tentative plans to head over to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas to take in the big game in person. (Renner lives in Washoe County, Nevada, but is from Modesto, California, which is about two hours west of San Francisco.)

“It is on the weekend, so when the Niners go... I'll definitely have to go to that,” he said. “And it's in Vegas, so it should be easy enough to get to, I suppose. Yeah, I'd have to go to that.”

Renner is set to appear on-screen during the Super Bowl via his Silk ad, which features him grooving to James Brown’s “I Got You (I Feel Good)” while making breakfast for his 10-year-old daughter Ava.

PEOPLE caught up with the star on the set of the “Feel Planty Good” ad in Los Angeles in early January, and he explained why the chance to make a public declaration of his physical fitness after his 2023 snow plow accident was one he was excited to make with Ava by his side.

“It’s a beacon of hope for me and for my daughter as well, and this is a new part of our journey together in recovery and in life,” he said.

He added, “Getting back into life in a different way, out of a hospital bed, out of the house, being social, just doing normal things. It represents a lot to me, and I’m very thankful to be here to do this.”
