For many investors, the main point of stock picking is to generate higher returns than the overall market. But if you try your hand at stock picking, your risk returning less than the market. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term Abcourt Mines Inc. (CVE:ABI) shareholders, since the share price is down 39% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return of around 19%. The silver lining is that the stock is up 7.7% in about a week.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, Abcourt Mines moved from a loss to profitability. We would usually expect to see the share price rise as a result. So given the share price is down it's worth checking some other metrics too.

We note that, in three years, revenue has actually grown at a 30% annual rate, so that doesn't seem to be a reason to sell shares. It's probably worht worth investigating Abcourt Mines further; while we may be missing something on this analysis, there might also be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Abcourt Mines shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 27% over one year. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 1.4% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business.
