Did Business Growth Power Gran Colombia Gold's (TSE:GCM) Share Price Gain of 291%?

It might seem bad, but the worst that can happen when you buy a stock (without leverage) is that its share price goes to zero. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For example, the Gran Colombia Gold Corp. (TSE:GCM) share price has soared 291% in the last three years. Most would be happy with that. And in the last month, the share price has gained 2.0%.

During three years of share price growth, Gran Colombia Gold moved from a loss to profitability. Given the importance of this milestone, it's not overly surprising that the share price has increased strongly.

It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on Gran Colombia Gold's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Gran Colombia Gold has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 89% in the last twelve months. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 6.1% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. If you want to research this stock further, the data on insider buying is an obvious place to start.
