Despite shrinking by US$192m in the past week, CNO Financial Group (NYSE:CNO) shareholders are still up 32% over 3 years

It hasn't been the best quarter for CNO Financial Group, Inc. (NYSE:CNO) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 21% in that time. But at least the stock is up over the last three years. However, it's unlikely many shareholders are elated with the share price gain of 23% over that time, given the rising market.

While this past week has detracted from the company's three-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During three years of share price growth, CNO Financial Group moved from a loss to profitability. So we would expect a higher share price over the period.

We know that CNO Financial Group has improved its bottom line over the last three years, but what does the future have in store? You can see how its balance sheet has strengthened (or weakened) over time in this free interactive graphic.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for CNO Financial Group the TSR over the last 3 years was 32%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 9.4% in the twelve months, CNO Financial Group shareholders did even worse, losing 21% (even including dividends). However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 3%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand CNO Financial Group better, we need to consider many other factors. For instance, we've identified 4 warning signs for CNO Financial Group (2 are concerning) that you should be aware of.
