Dakota Johnson will star in the upcoming adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion.

The film is a “modern, witty approach” to Austen’s 1817 novel, which will be directed by Carrie Cracknell and written by Oscar-winner Ron Bass and Alice Victoria Winslow.

Cracknell recently worked on Jake Gyllenhall and Tom Sturridge’s Tony-nominated performances in the Broadway play Sea Wall/A Life, reports the Independent.

There is no premiere date for Persuasion, but it will be released on Netflix with its official description explaining: “Living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy, Anne Elliot is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities.

Johnson's most recent work saw her play frustrated PA Maggie to a superstar (Tracee Ellis Ross) in The High Note.

The actress revealed to Harper's Bazaar that she identified with the character, having often found herself fighting against setbacks and feeling insecure.

"I'm riddled with self-doubt and criticism and so is [Maggie]," she explained. "I still lose jobs and I don't get every job that I want. I have dreams of working with certain people on certain projects and it doesn't happen. It's a cutthroat industry so I'm used to being shut down."

Previously, Persuasion was adapted in 2007 for a film which aired on ITV, as well as a 1995 BBC version that won five BAFTAs.
