The Crown's Helena Bonham Carter says people were "ready to be frightened" of her on set

From Digital Spy

The Crown star Helena Bonham Carter has said that the cast and crew behind the acclaimed Netflix drama treated her as if she was royalty during filming, and that they seemed "ready to be frightened" of her version of Princess Margaret on set.

The actor, who took over the role from Vanessa Kirby in the show's third season, said it didn't matter that those around her knew she was "faking it" – they still responded to her differently whenever she was wearing the character's well-to-do get-up and channelling her fiery nature.

"There's a great fun in playing a royal. Even though they obviously know that you're not really royal, they treat you like royalty," she joked to Digital Spy and other media ahead of the 2020 BAFTA TV Awards tonight (July 31).

"So even though I'm not remotely like Princess Margaret, she did creep in and I did learn a few things from her. People treated me like Margaret, and they were just sort of ready to be frightened of me," she laughed.

"The power and the licence to behave badly was fantastic. I could just be incredibly demanding and everyone would find it hysterically funny. Instantly high status. It was hilarious... It was such fun."

Despite revelling in her newfound, unintentional intimidation tactics, Bonham Carter – who is up for a Best Supporting Actress gong at tonight's virtual ceremony – went on to admit that she was nervous about bringing such a formidable figure to life during the early days of production.

"It was scary at the beginning," she explained candidly. "But then it subsided."

The Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards 2020 will be broadcast on BBC One tonight (Friday, July 31) at 7pm. The Crown is available to watch on Netflix now.
