Comcast (CMCSA) Unveils New Wi-Fi Solution for Businesses

U.S. cable MSO (multi-service operator) Comcast Corporation CMCSA plans to woo business customers with WiFi Pro – its latest Wi-Fi solution. The solution comprises cloud-based controls, marketing tools and added innovative capabilities to bring fast Wi-Fi speeds and expanded range to small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) as well as branch locations of large enterprises.

WiFi Pro offers business customers two commercial Wi-Fi networks – one private network for employees and another guest network for visitors and customers. Comcast is providing complementary installation of the needed equipment and access points for WiFi Pro. Moreover, users can make custom splash pages for marketing purposes and manage network configurations from a mobile app or online portal.

Notably, Comcast has been aggressively targeting the business services segment which has become a major growth driver for cable TV operators. After tasting considerable success at the SMB segment, Comcast is also expanding its business services division to cater to large enterprises amid mounting video subscriber churn and competitive threat from online video streaming providers like Netflix, Inc. NFLX and Hulu.

Meanwhile, the booming Wi-Fi market has become a key growth driver for telecom/cable TV operators. The move into managed Wi-Fi offerings is an expansion of cable TV operator’s prevailing Wi-Fi hotspot endeavors. Notably, last year, U.S. telecom behemoth AT&T, Inc. T unveiled a Wi-Fi solution named Small Site for small businesses.

Interestingly, as per a recent study by Cisco, Wi-Fi devices will power a bulk of all Internet traffic by 2017. Also, Tech Pro Research has revealed that 74% of businesses are using or are planning to adopt Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies.

Thus, with demand for Wi-Fi growing exponentially, the new service should help retain and attract a larger base of business customers, predominantly those who do not have the IT resources to deploy services themselves, but desire flexibility within their office space.

Comcast currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). A better-ranked stock in the same sector is Time Warner Cable Inc. TWC, with a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
