Coffee company wants to open 1st Illinois location at Orchard Town Center in Glen Carbon

An Oregon-based drive-thru coffee company wants to build its first Illinois location at Glen Carbon’s Orchard Town Center.

Erika Heil, Glen Carbon’s community development director, wrote in a June 21 memo to the Building and Development Committee that Dutch Bros Coffee is “looking to invest in the Village” and open its first Illinois location.

According to the memo, Heil, Public Works Director Scott Slemer, and Village Administrator Jamie Bowden met with Dutch Bros to review the coffee company’s concept and made plans to proceed with site plan review.

Heil wrote that she supports a favorable recommendation by the committee to move forward with the development.

The site for the proposed business is at Orchard Town Center’s outparcel 12-b, which is at the southeast corner of the development, behind an AT&T store at the corner of Center Grove Road and Troy Road.

Tim Lowe of the Staenberg Group, the development company for Orchard Town Center, could not comment at this time because there’s not yet a formal agreement with Dutch Bros Coffee.

The business is still in the early planning stages with the Village of Glen Carbon. If the village approves the addition of the business and a formal agreement with the tenant is signed, Lowe will then be free to comment.

Lowe previously stated that the Staenberg Group’s goal is bringing new-to-market tenants to Orchard Town Center.

Such tenants include Chick-fil-A, Olive Garden and Panda Express, which didn’t previously exist in this particular metro-east market.

Other businesses at Orchard Town Center include Club Car Wash, Plaza Tire Service, Dick’s Sporting Goods and the development’s anchor, Meijer.

In September, Meijer was granted a 12-month extension to start construction. The timeframe for the Glen Carbon store was pushed back to coincide with the construction and opening of another Meijer store in O’Fallon.

According to the development brochure on the Staenberg Group’s website, three other outlots are currently under contract.

Should the addition of Dutch Bros Coffee proceed, it would reinforce the Staenberg Group’s promise to bring new businesses to Glen Carbon.

Four more carts were added soon after, and by 1994, the first drive-through location was established. Today, there are 876 locations in the U.S. across 17 states and territories.

Travis Boersma is currently the executive chairman of Dutch Bros Coffee. Dane Boersma died in 2009 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease.
