National Bank to buy Canadian Western Bank at $5 billion valuation
MONTREAL — Canada's banking sector is facing further consolidation as National Bank of Canada has reached an all-share deal to acquire Canadian Western Bank that values the lender at about $5 billion. The deal will see Quebec-focused National Bank expand its geographic reach as it takes over Canadian Western's operations, which are concentrated in Alberta and British Columbia. Russia, hit by new US sanctions, halts dollar and euro trade on main bourse
(Reuters) -New U.S. sanctions against Russia have forced an immediate suspension of trading in dollars and euros on its leading financial marketplace, the Moscow Exchange. The exchange and the central bank rushed out statements on Wednesday - a public holiday in Russia - within an hour of Washington announcing a new round of sanctions aimed at cutting the flow of money and goods to sustain Russia's war in Ukraine. "Due to the introduction of restrictive measures by the United States against the Moscow Exchange Group, exchange trading and settlements of deliverable instruments in U.S. dollars and euros are suspended," the central bank said.

Crude quality issues on TMX pipe may hamper flows from Canada to US West Coast refiners
HOUSTON (Reuters) -U.S. oil refiners and West Coast traders are flagging concerns about the quality of crude shipped on the newly completed Trans Mountain pipeline expansion (TMX), warning that high vapor pressure and acidity limits could deter purchases of Canadian heavy barrels. The $24.84 billion (C$34 bln) expansion started operations last month and has nearly tripled shipping capacity to Canada's Pacific Coast to 890,000 barrels per day (bpd). The roughly 2.5 million bpd U.S. West Coast refining market is expected to be a major outlet for Canadian heavy oil shipped via Trans Mountain but questions over crude quality could dampen demand for the barrels.

C$ pares gain as Fed sees just one rate cut this year
The Canadian dollar gave back some earlier gains against its U.S. counterpart on Wednesday as the Federal Reserve signaled a reduced number of interest rate cuts this year despite evidence of cooling inflation. The Fed held rates steady, as expected, with officials projecting only a single quarter-percentage-point reduction for the year compared to three previously. "Treasury yields are partially reversing this morning’s declines, and the (U.S.) dollar is inching higher, suggesting that market participants are viewing the (rate) decision through a very modestly-hawkish lens," Karl Schamotta, chief market strategist at Corpay, said in a note.
