Canadian Taxpayers Federation spurns idea of pop tax

Kevin Lacey of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation says Premier Brian Gallant should say no to a pop tax, as he says New Brunswickers are being taxed enough.

Lacey says the provincial government in New Brunswick has hiked income tax, sales tax, and gas tax in the past three years. He says that has taken the province from one of the lowest taxed places to one of the highest taxed places in the country.

"It's time for the premier to understand that New Brunswickers are taxed out," said Lacey in a news release.

"They have nothing left to give. They need their government to tell them they won't create kooky new taxes like one on their pop."

Lacey says a tax on drinks would be difficult to apply and he doesn't believe it would do anything to help New Brunswickers live healthier lives. He says it would be bad news for taxpayers.

"Under a pop tax the taxpayer loses. The government just takes more and more of your money to fund more bureaucrats and administration," said Lacey.
