Call for Entries to Route 66 Vintage Scrambles

Call for Entries to Route 66 Vintage Scrambles

The Southwest Vintage Committee will host their second event at the Roy Rogers Double R Ranch in Oro Grande, CA, November 20th and they want you to sign up a ride. These are the same folks who saw an abandoned golf course in Victorville and started pulling strings and jumping through the necessary hoops to put on a race there in May. They are dedicated to true vintage off-road scrambles racing, on natural terrain tracks, with short travel bikes.

Racing short travel, scrambler, desert sleds and motocross bikes on an old cowboy's ranch? If you know anything about motocross history, that will ring a bell. The very first international motocross events in the United States took place in Simi Valley (outside of L.A.) at what was known as the Corriganville Movie Ranch (owned by Ray "Crash" Corrigan), or later Hope Town (when owned by Bob Hope). In fact, if you can find the old Bruce Brown film of the event, I believe they actually raced right through an old barn; in one side, and out the other.

This race is limited to vintage bikes only. That means 4-inches of rear suspension travel (or less if you race a hard tail) and 7-inches of front travel. Sorry, no post vintage classes or modern support racing, you'll have to go race the Bomber class at another track somewhere else. Typical bikes include old Triumph Twin desert sleds, BSA Singles, Yamaha DT-1 enduros, and of course CZ, Maico, Bultaco and Huskys. At the last race there was even someone with a Honda Twin of some sort, possibly a CL77, which added a little variety.

Friday the gates open at noon, and you can camp out overnight and sing cowboy songs, or head down to the Community Table at the Holiday Inn Victorville for a scrambles mixer. Saturday morning gates open at 7am, and there will be a trials course set up for low speed technical riding. Sunday the gates open at 7am and its racing all day long. Entry is $50 for the first class, $35 each additional class. Are you racing the Day in the Dirt at Glen Helen later in November? Mention that and save $10 on your entry. Members of any vintage race clubs save $5 off their entry too. Hurry up, pre-entry closes on November 13th. The entry forms are on the www.oldschoolscramblesracing.com web page.

I will be out there covering the event, and possibly racing in it, but definitely there to support this fledgling club that is breaking new ground and establishing new venues for this type of racing. Special note: According to the ranch's website, you shouldn't rely on your GPS to find it, or you will end at the ostrich farm next door.
