Cadillac Cuts Price, Enhances Performance of 2016 ELR Plug-in Coupe

Cadillac has lowered the price of its ELR plug-in hybrid coupe for the 2016 model year by $10,000, to an MSRP of less than $66,000 from $75,000. For many buyers, the price can be further reduced to $58,495 after applying $7,500 in federal tax credits. In addition to the price cut, technology upgrades have been made to boost the 2016 ELR's power, performance, and handling in an effort to excite premium and green-conscious consumers.

Debuting in 2014, the ELR is based on the Chevrolet Volt platform and shares its powertrain. For 2016, Cadillac adds a new grille and crest to update the look of the car. An improved electric drive system increases the ELR's power and torque by 25% and, according to Cadillac, will boost acceleration to achieve 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds--1.5 seconds faster than the current model.

Special tuning and adjustments have been made to improve handling, steering, and braking for more responsive driving that is expected in a premium sport coupe. Also, the 2016 ELR will come equipped with the OnStar communication system and built-in Wi-Fi.

For 2016, the Driver Assistance active safety systems--optional on the current ELR--are standard and include side blind-zone alert, rear cross-traffic alert, and Intellibeam headlamps. Lane-change alert and a new vehicle security system are also standard on the new ELR.

Cadillac also will offer an optional Performance package that includes 20-in. summer-only performance tires on new sport wheels, front Brembo 4-piston brakes, special calibration for the steering systems, and a sport steering wheel.

The 2016 Cadillac ELR offers a driving range of up to 330 mi. when combining power from the electric battery and a 1.4-liter gasoline engine generator. For short commutes, the ELR can be driven up to 39 mi. using energy stored in the Lithium-ion battery pack, according to Cadillac. The automaker also says that the ELR's battery can be recharged in about 5 hours using a 240-volt charger.

Through the first 3 months of 2015, Cadillac delivered 311 new ELRs, up from 180 in the same period of 2014, according to sales data compiled by J.D. Power and LMC Automotive. Total sales in 2014 were 1,310 units.
