Bulls in charge as Dow, S&P 500 hit new highs

The livestream has ended, please check back for the replay.

Make that nine days in a row—the Dow’s winning streak continues as it hits another all-time high. And the S&P 500? Another all-time intraday high. Catch The Final Round with Alexis Christoforous and editor-in-chief Andy Serwer at 4 p.m. ET.

Winners and losers

Stocks in the red today include 21st Century Fox, with the reported imminent departure of Fox News CEO Roger Ailes; miner Barrick Gold losing its luster as gold sells off again today; and Kellogg. The cereal-maker surged initially on reports of private jet tail numbers suggesting Berkshire Hathaway execs were visiting Kellogg headquarters, but then sold off when CNBC’s David Faber reported sources said “there is nothing going on” there.

Stocks on the move higher include United Airlines on an earnings beat and stock buyback plan, solar firm TerraForm Global after it revealed bankrupt SunEdison is looking to sell its interest in the “yield co,” and Morgan Stanley, with shares jumping after it handily beat profit and revenue expectations, citing improving business in its fixed income, wealth management, and investment banking units.

Junk bonds back in vogue?

Is it time to turn back the clock buy junk bonds? JP Morgan’s Anastasia Amoroso makes the case for high yield.

Looking ahead

  • If it’s Thursday, it’s time for weekly jobless claims data. The consensus is for 265,000 new claims.

  • We’ll also get existing home sales data for June. Economists are expecting 5.474 million sales in the past month.

  • And in San Diego, it’s Comic-Con time. The biggest exhibition of its kind in the world for comic book fans opens to the public tomorrow with exhibitions, screenings and panels featuring artists, actors, writers and directors covering all things inspired by comic books. Kicking things off tonight is an outdoor IMAX screening of Star Trek Beyond, featuring live musical accompaniment.
