I Built A List Of Growing Companies And Steven Madden (NASDAQ:SHOO) Made The Cut

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Steven Madden (NASDAQ:SHOO). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

How Quickly Is Steven Madden Increasing Earnings Per Share?

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. Steven Madden managed to grow EPS by 7.7% per year, over three years. While that sort of growth rate isn't amazing, it does show the business is growing.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Steven Madden shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 9.3% to 12%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Steven Madden Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. So it is good to see that Steven Madden insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth US$209m. This suggests to me that leadership will be very mindful of shareholders' interests when making decisions!

Should You Add Steven Madden To Your Watchlist?

One important encouraging feature of Steven Madden is that it is growing profits. Just as polish makes silverware pop, the high level of insider ownership enhances my enthusiasm for this growth. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. While we've looked at the quality of the earnings, we haven't yet done any work to value the stock. So if you like to buy cheap, you may want to check if Steven Madden is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
