BMW's next luxury play? Driverless remote parking

The German automaker says its 7 Series would be the first production model to allow parking without a driver behind the wheel.

BMW (BMW-DE) is taking smart technology to a luxury line.

The German automaker's next 7 Series sedan will feature driverless remote parking, the company said on Friday. It would become the first production model to allow automated parking without a driver behind the wheel, BMW said. (Tweet this)

BMW says the feature—controlled by the newly developed "BMW Display Key"—will fit vehicles into tighter spaces than under manual control. The car will also include an infotainment system controlled by hand gestures, among other features.

BMW did not specify when the model will hit the market. MSRP on the 2015 7 Series can reach $75,000 or higher, depending on specifications.

The 7 Series continues the German automaker's dive into automated parking. In January, the company unveiled a smartwatch-linked remote system in its i3 electric car at the International Consumer Electronics Show.

Drivers control the i3 with voice commands into a smartwatch.
